my first time in hanko I.

last sunday we were in the mood for a short trip and out of the blue we ended up in Hanko - a port town on the southernmost point of continental Finland. we walked along a sandy beach on the opposite side of the harbour: the weather was gray and the place felt abandoned and lonely. here is a first selection of the extremely melancholy photographs I took that day.
Hanko - part one:
Nikomat EL - Kodak 400
even though the sea was still frozen by the shore we could smell the breeze coming in from the open water and that was magnificent. I have always been drawn to the sea - perhaps because I was born and raised on the mountains. that day in Hanko I thought a lot about the book Moominpappa at Sea.

  2. These wintery photos make me feel a little melancholic, because winter hasn't been here the last months and right now I am sitting on my balcony studying (and reading blogs). I would love to send you a little bit of spring!

    1. I know what you mean, Ingeborg. These, however, were taken already a couple of weeks ago... lately it definitely feels more springy here too, and I'm so glad of that!

  6. how beautiful! i guess i've never been to hanko.. even tough i'm finnish, that's terrible! it's amazing how a "tourist" can see so much in a place where an "inhabitant" doesn't find anything interesting. the same happens to me here as my friends find everything so ordinary and recently watching my pictures they notice some thing they've never drawn attention to. that's how i feel with your photographs polly!

    1. The funny thing is that we had not really seeing anything about the actual town of Hanko, but just the seaside... I'd like to go back there in the summertime though, to see how it looks when the sun is shining and the beach is full of people.
I totally understand your point and I agree. Thank you, Etta!

  11. hi Polly I found your blog through curating cuteness. Loved your photos so much.
I have never seen frozen sea. I wonder how people living in northern hemisphere gather courage to step out in such a cold. But always dream about living in a place with four seasons.

PS - I am glad to find you take film photos. I am trying too. :-)

    1. Dear Pratiksha, thank you for stopping by and for your lovely comment!
This year that winter hasn't been very cold, but sometimes it is hard to go out when it is below -15 degrees celsius. I'm looking forward to spring at the moment!

    1. Thank you so much, Rhianne! I'll tell you what, the best part of the frozen sea is that you can walk over it... not right now though, it's already melting and it's quite dangerous.
